A head teacher has been discovered dead at her school in Worcestershire.

Helen Mann's body was found at Sytchampton Endowed First School in Stourport-on-Severn at 16:20 GMT on Monday, during a teacher training day.

The BBC understands Ms Mann, who had recently taken up the post, took her own life.

Worcestershire County Council said the school, which caters for children aged five to nine, would be closed until at least Thursday.

Dr Stephanie Gait, chairwoman of governors at the school said: "It is with great sadness that we confirm the passing of our head teacher, Helen Mann."

She said the governors offered their "deepest sympathy" to family, friends and colleagues, and the school would be working with the local authority to provide support to staff and pupils.

Parents would be informed about the school's reopening, which would be "as soon as possible", she said.

A spokesman from West Mercia Police said the death of a woman in her 40s was being treated as unexplained but was not believed to be suspicious.

The county council have said there were no pupils in the school on Monday.
