Shall we have an encore of this heart-warming description of Christmas 2018 at Chez Detterling, Tyneside? Well, yes, I think we shall.

JUST LOVE THIS DEPICTION OF CHRISTMAS ON TYNESIDE

I posted this on the TES website prior to Christmas 2020. It was met with derision from many TESSERS.  Nevertheless, I love this wholesome glimpse of Christmas at Chez Detters.

I RATE IT UP THERE WITH DESCRIPTIONS OF CHRISTMAS BY DICKENS, LAURIE LEE et al.

(It was sent to me by Detterling  on Christmas Day 2018)

CHRISTMAS 2018

Saturday, a warm and hilarious family gathering with mother-in-law, brother-in-law and partner.

.....Sunday, daughters, husbands and grand-daughters convene at our house for a loud and happy afternoon culminating in acapella carol- singing round the piano which brought the neighbours round with requests for Silent Night and The Angel Gabriel, then all the family to Nine Lessons and Carols at our local church, where my son read a lesson with aplomb, understanding and relish.

.....yesterday, final preparations for the festival and in the evening, playing the organ at a carol service for an old friend whom I have known since she was six weeks old and who is now a vicar in the next parish but two.

.....and today, an early start with our son opening his presents, an afternoon with in-laws and nieces, and tonight Christmas dinner with the family, cooked by me and enjoyed by everyone.

Wishing a happy and holy Christmas to all my readers.

Trump vows to end ‘transgender lunacy’

By Tyler Arnold

Washington, D.C. Newsroom, Dec 23, 2024 / 16:15 pm

President-elect Donald Trump during a speech on Sunday, Dec. 22, vowed to sign executive orders to end transgender surgeries for children, to prevent biological men from playing in women’s sports, and to end the promotion of gender ideology in schools and the military.

“With the stroke of my pen, on Day 1, we’re going to stop the transgender lunacy,” Trump said at Turning Point USA’s annual AmericaFest in Phoenix.

“Under the Trump administration, it will be the official policy of the United States government that there are only two genders: male and female,” he added. “Doesn’t sound too complicated, does it?”

Trump’s comments over the weekend echo the president-elect’s promises during his 2024 presidential campaign. His statements suggest immediate changes to federal policy when he is sworn in as president in less than a month on Jan. 20, 2025.

Joseph Meaney, a bioethicist at the National Catholic Bioethics Center, told CNA: “It is good to hear that President-elect Trump has pledged to make male and female the only genders recognized by the U.S. federal government.”

“This will reverse the radical agenda that the Biden administration attempted to implement in favor of the transgender ideology,” Meaney said.

The president-elect said his first-day executive orders will include an end to “child sexual mutilation” in the United States, which is in reference to the transgender surgeries being performed on children in about half of the country.

Irreversible transgender surgeries — which include genital surgeries to make them appear more similar to the genitals of the opposite sex, chest surgeries to remove a girl’s healthy breasts or implant prosthetic breasts on boys, and other aesthetic surgeries — are still legal for children in 24 states in the country.

According to a report from the medical watchdog Do No Harm, at least 5,747 children received transgender surgeries between 2019 and 2023. This number is based on publicly available data, but the researchers believe the number is likely higher.

President Joe Biden’s administration has supported doctors providing transgender surgeries to children. The current Department of Justice, along with families represented by the American Civil Liberties Union, filed a lawsuit against Tennessee’s prohibition on the procedures. The case is currently in front of the United States Supreme Court.

Theresa Farnan, a fellow for the Person and Identity Project at the Ethics and Public Policy Center, told CNA that Trump’s statements “reflect the mood of the country, where parents know intuitively that ‘gender transition’ medical interventions are harmful.”

“It is good to see that political leaders are finally courageous enough to represent the common sense of the vast majority of parents,” Farnan said.

Farnan, however, noted that Catholic bishops have consistently taught that these surgeries and other transgender procedures are inherently unethical, and not just unethical when administered on minors, “as they alter the natural order and finality of the body.”

“As Catholics, we must regard any executive orders that the Trump administration issues banning gender transitions for minors as a good start, while recognizing that our work is not done — the protection from medical exploitation and medicalized self harm should be extended to all vulnerable persons, not just minors,” Farnan said.

Trump also said: “We will keep men out of women’s sports,” in reference to biological males being permitted to play in women’s and girls’ sports in about half of the country. He also said he would get transgenderism “out of our elementary schools and middle schools and high schools.”

This would also be a reversal of the Biden administration’s policies. The Biden Department of Education revised its interpretation of Title IX regulations to apply all bans on sex discrimination to include a ban on discriminating against someone’s self-asserted “gender identity.” These discrimination rules apply to K–12 schools, colleges, and other educational institutions.

Bottom of Form

Enforcement of the Biden administration rules, however, has been halted by judges for 26 states after state attorneys general filed legal challenges, arguing that the executive branch lacks the authority to redefine “sex” discrimination to be inclusive of “gender identity” discrimination. Legal scholars warned that the new regulation would overrule state-level policies that restrict women’s and girls’ sports, locker rooms, bathrooms, and dormitories to only biological women and girls.

Biden administration officials had been working on new regulations that would have explicitly prohibited state-level laws that restrict girls’ and women’s sports to only biological girls and women. However, the administration withdrew that proposal on Friday, Dec. 20.

Trump also vowed to get transgenderism “out of the military.” Under Biden’s administration, the Department of Defense has used taxpayer-funded programs to pay for gender transitions for members of the military and their families. During Trump’s first term, he prohibited the military from allowing most people with gender dysphoria to serve in the military, citing concerns about mental health and military readiness.

ODDS and ENDS

Phew! That was a term that was! We broke up on Friday. Have I been busy? Or have I been busy? I know that I have been neglecting this blog - but I will do some much-needed catching up work on it over the holidays.

And just think   ...    only one more year to go until glorious retirement. On 31st December 2016 I shall be a free man with loads of time to concentrate on my career as a writer. And talking of my writing career the West Ruislip Pensioners Voice magazine did an interview with me over the October half term. It should be published on this blog soon

To other matters: the Canting Old Phony is back posting on the TES website. He can be found on the Personal Forum where many of the old lags from Opinion Forum have ended up. He is just as pompous, pretentious, self-righteous and boring as ever.

By the way, a great new poster has turned up on the TES website. Under the username of Johnny Bluenote he has posted some marvellous threads full of rapier-like wit and profound erudition. He has a wonderful, easy on the eye writing style with such a splendid lightness of touch. He has got away with two quite risqué threads: Have you ever paid for it? (which turns out to be about the TES hard copy magazine and Who's stuffing your turkey this Christmas? Tee! Hee! Hee! Hee!

Finally this year's Christmas card to all my readers:

Archbishop of York 'regrets' that abuse scandal priest had role renewed twice

A Church of England priest at the centre of a sexual abuse case was twice reappointed to a senior role during the Archbishop of York's time as Bishop of Chelmsford, the BBC can reveal.

A BBC investigation previously revealed how David Tudor remained in post nine years after Stephen Cottrell was first told of concerns about him.

New information shows Tudor's contract as area dean in Essex was renewed in 2013 and 2018, at which times Mr Cottrell knew he had paid compensation to a woman who says she was abused by him as a child.

The Archbishop of York said he regrets his handling of the case, with a spokesperson saying "he acknowledges this could have been handled differently".

They added that "all the risks around David Tudor were regularly reviewed" and that was the "main focus".

The pressure on Mr Cottrell comes at a time of turmoil in the Church of England following a damning report into how it covered up prolific abuse by the barrister John Smyth.

The report led to the resignation of the Church's most senior figure, Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby. Mr Cottrell will take over his role temporarily for a few months in the New Year.

Rachel Ford, who told the investigation she was groomed by Tudor as a child, said the renewal of his contract as area dean was "an insult to all of his victims".

Ms Ford added that if responsibility for that lay with Mr Cottrell, it strengthened her feeling that he should resign.

The BBC investigation showed Mr Cottrell was briefed in his first week as Bishop of Chelmsford about serious safeguarding issues surrounding Tudor.

These included that Tudor was convicted of indecently assaulting three underage girls and was jailed for six months in 1988, although the conviction was quashed on technical grounds. Mr Cottrell would also have known Tudor served a five-year ban from ministry.

By 2012, Mr Cottrell also knew Tudor had paid a £10,000 settlement to a woman who says she was sexually abused by him from the age of 11. In 2018, the Church of England issued an apology and a six-figure pay-out to another alleged victim.

Yet the priest was suspended only in 2019 when a police investigation was launched after another woman came forward alleging Tudor had abused her in the 1980s.

When first responding to the BBC's investigation, the Archbishop of York said he was "deeply sorry that we were not able to take action earlier", insisting he had acted at the first opportunity that was legally available to him.

Mr Cottrell also said he had been faced with a "horrible and intolerable" situation and that it was "awful to live with and to manage".

When Mr Cottrell became bishop in 2010, Tudor was into the second year of a five-year term as an area dean, a role overseeing 12 parishes in Essex.

His appointment to that post, under a different bishop, happened despite him working under a safeguarding agreement that barred him from being alone with children and entering schools.

The title was renewed twice under Mr Cottrell - in 2013 and 2018 - and he lost the title only when the term of office expired in 2020. It was not taken from him.

A spokesperson for the Archbishop said he "accepts responsibility for David Tudor remaining as Area Dean".

"No-one advised him that David Tudor should not continue as an Area Dean," said the Archbishop's office.

Bishop of Newcastle Helen-Ann Hartley posted on X that Mr Cottrell's expressions of regret did not "square" with his actions.

"I don't know how you can find a situation 'horrible and intolerable' and then square that with what is reported here.

"Answer is, you can't and be expected to be a credible voice as the leadership of the Church of England."

Another of Tudor's victims, who does not want to be identified, said she was "shocked and disappointed" to hear his tenure as area dean was twice renewed during Mr Cottrell's time as Bishop of Chelmsford.

"These are not the actions of a bishop dealing with a situation that was intolerable to him, in fact, quite the opposite. I call on him to do the honourable thing for the sake of the Church and resign," she says.

In 2015, under Mr Cottrell, Tudor was also made honorary canon of Chelmsford Cathedral.

The Archbishop's office insisted it happened because of a change in Church policy during Mr Cottrell's time as Bishop of Chelmsford, meaning area deans were automatically made honorary canons.

It was "not a promotion and not a personal reward".

However, a social media post from Tudor's Canvey Island parish in July 2015 suggests it was seen there as a reward.

Tudor's "hard work, determination and commitment to this place have been recognised by the diocese and this new position in the Church is very well-deserved," it said.

The BBC has also seen evidence - in leaked minutes from internal Church meetings in 2018 and 2019 - that Tudor's titles of area dean and honorary canon were discussed and there had been a suggestion Mr Cottrell could immediately have taken them away.

In October 2018, a meeting at Church House - the London headquarters of the Church of England - heard that Chelmsford diocese took the view that if Tudor "can be a parish priest, he can undertake the other roles".

A bishop from another diocese said "the Bishop of Chelmsford could remove DT's [David Tudor's] Canon and Area Dean titles straight away".

But in a follow-up discussion in November 2018, Chelmsford diocese advised it would not be appropriate because of "the difficulty of removing those titles without explaining why."

We asked Mr Cottrell's office why he had not followed the suggestion to remove Tudor's titles. We were told "it would not be appropriate to comment on any notes or decisions from a core group process which are confidential".

The investigation also highlighted the significant role played by former Archbishop of Canterbury George Carey in the case.

We revealed Lord Carey had agreed to Tudor's return to priesthood after being suspended in 1989, and had also agreed to have Tudor's name removed from the list of clergy that had faced disciplinary action. He had also advocated for the priest.

After the BBC put this information to the former Archbishop of Canterbury, he wrote to give up his "permission to officiate", ending more than 65 years of ministry in the Church of England. Lord Carey made the announcement on Tuesday.

In October 2024, Tudor admitted sexual misconduct and was sacked by the Church. At no point has he responded to the BBC's attempts to speak with him.

THE CHURCH OF ENGLAND CRISIS GROWS WORSE DAY BY DAY...

The C of E is now headless, leaderless, rudderless. New scandals come out day after day.
