There are five of us in the pilgrimage group. One is a lady from Ickenham - an artist who specialises in watercolours. We will have some lovely mementoes of our pilgrimage.

Typical of Gene to treat the two holiest places in British Christendom as tourist attractions - his grubby presence soils everything he touches and everywhere he goes. “Mementoes” indeed.

Maybe Iona, the place where (said George MacLeod) the gap between earth and heaven is tissue paper thin, will strip away Gene’s self-basting, pretentious and shallow pietistic attitudinising and replace it with genuine humility, such that he will realise what an appalling travesty of Christian belief his bigoted, doctrinaire, brain-dead Catholicism actually is.
It’s more likely though that we’ll get toe-curlingly embarrassing and fifth-hand spiritual platitudes straight from the Patience Strong/Hallmark handbook. Gene’s palsied imagination will reduce a profound spiritual experience to a trip to the corner shop for some chewing gum.
