The spirit of Dave Spart lives on

The spirit of Dave Spart lives on

Dave Spart

The National Union of Journalists has – shamefully – come out in favour of press regulation by the authorities. Years ago I was NUJ father of the chapel at my weekly newspaper, and I can’t begin to tell you what a useless job the union did of looking after the interests of local hacks. The dope-addled Dave Sparts in charge were far more interested in Nicaragua than Neasden. But even they would have drawn the line at the following:
“We believe that if we are to achieve independent, accountable regulation it needs to be underpinned by statute enabling a framework for a new body to be established with clear terms of reference and a structure that involves journalists and civil society as key stakeholders.”
I’m quoting Michelle Stanistreet, general secretary of the NUJ. Not to be rude, but if that’s a sample of her prose style then I’m not too gutted at missing her articles in the Sunday Express, where she worked (and no doubt moaned) for 10 years.
